LIBREOFFICE VS MICROSOFT OFFICE HOW TO
I wasn't afraid in a "I don't know what my options are so I'm sticking with what works," but more like the "I'm not willing to be 'that guy' who subjects my advisor and everyone I work with to learn how to use some different system because of some unperceived benefit that they can't immediately understand." In terms of compatibility, though, Office 2011 is pretty much right on the money - never a complaint from anyone I work with. I ended up sticking with Endnote because I was afraid of compatibility issues and having issues with Track Changes. When Papers 2 came out I debated using Endnote (which I hate in many ways, though it's getting better) versus Papers 2 for doing references. eeks! Don't like giving bad advice to my sister. And the iWork only because, well, I figured, 'document editor, what more do ya need?' It never occured to me the collaboration with the professors and the track changes features being used. I only suggested, 'Scivener' because it was recommended to me as a great editor for large research heavy documents. I need to get in touch with my sister doing her doctorate at Columbia U and make sure she didn't take my advice. Wow, could people repeat the same anecdote over and over again? And I don't mean that as a complaint, I mean that as in total surprise how consistent the requirements are for MS Office in the academic environment.
LIBREOFFICE VS MICROSOFT OFFICE FOR FREE
A few numbers have been thrown around here but I believe that the academic version is $99 and it appears that there's a promotion right now.Īlso, she might get Office for free under a site license or something, in which case it costs nothing (though you still support Microsoft). It sounds like it would probbaly be good enough 99% of the time.which is nice to know, as I have a rooting interest in open source.Īs has been mentioned a few times be sure to look into the academic discount. Still I also learned your thoughts about compatibility and useability of Libre Office, which I also appreciate. I was presumtuous, overbearing and wrong.

She should choose her own and use whatever her advisor and colleagues use, for sure.

I consider this an important learning experience for me, more imprtant than any learning about software. Thank you everybody! You are all correct, I was 100% wrong to try to dictate to her on this, and I am suitably humbled.
